Air fryer potato chips can be made with sweet potatoes, regular potatoes or even purple potatoes! A healthy way to enjoy potato chips!
Air fryers are becoming very popular because they allow us to cook food without using oil or grease. They also save time and energy.
Now you can make your favorite afternoon snack, crispy potato chips, in the air fryer!
They come out crispy, full of flavor with classic chip flavor, and healthier than store-bought potato chips.
I used a combination of white potatoes, sweet potatoes, and purple potatoes. The purple potatoes are the ones that look burnt, but I promise they’re not. They just started off darker in color to begin with!
How to make Potato Chips in the Air Fryer
Decide which potatoes you’d prefer to use: a combination of different kinds or all one kind.
The most important thing is how thickly you slice your potatoes. If you slice them too thick, they’ll still be good but they won’t be crunchy and curly the way potato chips are.
I like to slice mine pretty thin for this favorite chips recipe because I want that crunch with every bite. To make sure they’re at the same level of thickness so that they cook evenly, I use a mandoline slicer.
If you’ve never used a mandoline, I HIGHLY recommend one!
They have different inserts so you can julienne your food or slice it to varying degrees of thickness. It makes your job go so much faster. Plus it makes sure everything comes out evenly. You can see a picture of my mandoline in my Creamy Cucumber Salad recipe. Plus it shows just how thinly it can slice your food!
So grab 2 large potatoes (I did 1 large sweet potato, 1 medium white potato, and 1 medium purple potato for mine). Wash them really well and then slice them thinly using your mandoline slicer.
Toss your potato slices in about 2 tablespoons of olive oil.
Then toss with sea salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
You can add additional spices if you want: chili powder, chives, cumin, celery salt, cinnamon, rosemary, etc.
Add them to your air fryer basket and then cook at 380 degrees for cook time at about 10-15 minutes.
Honestly, how long you cook them is going to depend on how thinly or thickly you sliced them.
I love mine extra crispy, but you can remove yours at whatever level of crispiness you prefer. Just pull the basket out after about 8 minutes and toss them.
I pulled them out about every 2-3 minutes after that to give them a good shake and keep an eye on them.
Enjoy immediately because warm, fresh homemade chips are everything. Or you can also store it in an airtight container for 3-4 days.
An air fryer chip is basically a convection oven that uses hot air instead of heat. The result is crispy chips that don’t require any oil or fat. You can now enjoy potato chips without frying them at home. This means fewer calories and no greasy mess.
