Are you craving Chick-fil-A’s ice cream? Is it Sunday, or do you just not want to make the drive to the nearest Chick-fil-A? The good news is that you can make ice cream that tastes like Chick-fil-A’s ice cream right in your kitchen!

While the churning and freezing might take a little time, it’s worth waiting for the final product. So let’s dive into the details of this creamy, dreamy delight to better understand what it takes to craft a perfect Chick-fil-A ice cream.

Equipment for Chick-Fil-A Ice Cream

Before we start with the actual making, we need to gather a few basic utensils. What we’ll need:

  • A good-quality mixing bowl
  • A mixing spoon
  • An ice cream machine
  • A spoon for taste-tests
  • Bowls for serving

You’ll find a lot of different models for ice cream machines! This Elite Gourmet Electric Ice Cream Maker Machine is pretty close to the one my grandfather used to have.

The Ingredients List for Chick-fil-A Ice Cream

No recipe is complete without the right ingredients. Here’s our list:

  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tsp organic vanilla extract
  • Pinch of Table Salt
  • 14 oz organic sweetened condensed milk
  • 16 oz organic unsweetened coconut milk
  • 1 quart (4 cups) heavy cream or half and half
  • 3 oz chocolate chips
  • 4-5 cups of ice cubes for the machine
  • Food-grade rock salt

About The Ingredients for Chick-fil-A Ice Cream

Each ingredient plays a specific role in achieving the smooth, lightly sweet, soft-serve–style texture Chick-fil-A is known for.

Brown Sugar

¾ cup brown sugar

I’ve always thought brown sugar had a more robust sort of sweetness than white sugar due to the molasses content. This can add a better flavor to ice cream.

I like to make sure the brown sugar uses actual molasses instead of an artificial sweetener. (A quick glance at the ingredients should let you know.) If it has only sugar and molasses, like this Amazon Grocery brand dark brown sugar, I’ll snap it up!

Organic Vanilla Extract

Vanilla extract adds depth to recipes that are supposed to be sweet. You’ll likely find a lot of relatively inexpensive imitation vanilla extract in the grocery store. I like to go for genuine vanilla extract, though.

Table Salt

Pinch of Table Salt

You don’t need a lot of salt here. You only need a pinch to really bring the rest of the flavors.

Sweetened Condensed Milk

14 ounces sweetened condensed milk

Condensed milk is made by removing about 60% of the water from whole milk. The sweetened version also adds sugar. (Yes, you can get it unsweetened if you want!)

Unsweetened Coconut Milk

16 ounces unsweetened coconut milk

Coconut milk adds a complex, coconut-like flavor that complements the sweet flavors quite well.

Heavy Cream or Half and Half

1 quart (4 cups) Heavy Cream or Half and Half

Heavy cream is what makes it possible for homemade ice cream to beat a lot of the frozen treats you’ll find at the grocery store! It adds the dairy needed to make your ice cream similar to Chick-fil-A’s ice cream.

Ice and Salt

4-5 cups ice cubes

Rock salt, enough to fill the gaps between the ice cubes and add a salt layer on top

Ice cubes help make the ice cream cool enough to freeze properly. The rock salt actually doesn’t go into the ice cream, so no worries if you’re on a low-sodium diet! Instead, it goes into the same compartment in the ice cream maker as the ice cubes do to help keep the ice cubes frozen.

Chocolate Chips

3 ounces of chocolate chips

The fun part about making your own ice cream is that you can flavor it any way you like. For Chick-fil-A ice cream, I use chocolate chips.

You probably already have a lot of these ingredients in your kitchen! It won’t surprise me if you have to pick up a couple of things, though, so be sure to save or print the recipe card below to take with you to the grocery store.

  • Rock salt

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, combine brown sugar, organic vanilla, and a pinch of salt. Mix until the ingredients are well combined
  • Gradually add organic sweetened condensed milk and heavy cream to the sugar mixture. Stir continuously to ensure a smooth and creamy texture. The sugar mix should largely dissolve.
  • Add organic unsweetened coconut milk and lactose-free skim milk to the mixture. Blend thoroughly to incorporate all ingredients.
  • Add ice cubes and rock salt to the ice compartment of the ice cream maker.
  • Pour the mixture into the machine.
  • Churn the mixture until it starts to freeze around the edges.
  • Gently stir in chocolate chips to add a delightful texture and flavor to the ice cream.
  • Allow the mixture to churn for a few more minutes.
  • Monitor the consistency, and stop churning when the ice cream starts to thicken and pull from the sides.
  • When ready to serve, scoop the homemade Chick-Fil-A ice cream into bowls or cones.
  • Transfer leftover ice cream to an airtight container and store in the freezer.

Notes

  • Store leftover ice cream in an airtight container in the freezer for future enjoyment.

Easy Method for Making Chick-Fil-A Ice Cream

Making imitation Chick-fil-A ice cream is easier than you’d think! It really just takes patience, since it’ll take time to churn up and freeze in the ice cream maker.

(I know from watching my cousins that kids can be really impatient for their ice cream! So my grandfather would often already have that thing running when everyone came over.)

The important thing is to make sure everything gets mixed together well before we put it in the machine.

Here’s a pro tip: Make sure the ice cream machine is ready and raring to go. Once the ingredients are all fully incorporated, it’s time for the churning action. My grandfather would sometimes even have the ice cream machine already loaded with the ice and salt in the freezer for a brief time while he mixed everything else together.

Step 1: Combine Sugar, Vanilla, and Salt

Start by mixing the sugar, salt, and vanilla in a large bowl. The vanilla should be thoroughly blended with the sugar and salt, with no lumpy bits. This sets up the more complex flavors in ice cream.

Step 2: Gradually Add Condensed Milk, Heavy Cream, and Coconut Milk

Gradually stir in condensed milk, heavy cream, and coconut milk until the sugar dissolves.

Step 3: Prepare the Ice Cream Maker

Add ice and rock salt to the ice compartment of the ice cream maker if you haven’t already. Make sure it has a solid, flat surface to churn away on.

Step 4: Begin the Churning Process

Add the ice cream mixture to the middle compartment of the ice cream machine. Secure the lid on top, and then turn the machine on and let it churn until the mixture starts to show signs of freezing around the edges.

Step 5: Drop in Some Chocolate Chips

Stir these in gently, and then put the lid back on top.

Step 6: Thicken the Ice Cream Mixture

Let the ice cream mixture continue churning until it reaches the creamy, frozen texture you want. I like to have it a bit on the soft side. If you like to have it harder and more frozen, or you aren’t quite ready to serve it yet, it can be left in the freezer overnight.

Step 7: Scoop and Enjoy!

Now comes the most exciting part, serving. After all that mixing and freezing, it’s time to dish out your homemade Chick-fil-A ice cream. Grab your favorite bowl or ice cream cone, scoop generous portions of the silky frozen treat, and serve. Adding a delicious twist to an ordinary day was never this easy!

Special Notes to Remember

Before you head out to enjoy your homemade frozen delicacy, there are a few things to keep in mind. This home version of Chick-fil-A ice cream is best appreciated fresh. However, if you’re planning on saving some for later, remember to store the ice cream in an airtight container.

Also, if your ice cream turns out a bit too hard out of the freezer, let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes. This allows it to soften to that perfect, scoopable consistency.

Icing Off

Alright, we’re down to the final stretch now, folks. It’s been a wild ride, but trust me, all this effort will be worth it once you get a taste of that creamy, heavenly goodness. Remember, the Chick-fil-A ice cream isn’t just about the cream without ice or the variety of ice cream flavors. It’s about cherishing those little ice cream treats.

Before you jump straight to the frosted coffee, take a moment to enjoy your creation. Dig in, savor the flavors, and let the creaminess of the ice cream, the sweetness of the whipped cream, and the crunchiness of the malted marshmallows dance on your taste buds. Remember, whether it’s about making your version of Chick-fil-A ice cream or just trying to rustle up some grub at home, the key is always to have fun with it!

Substitutions for Chick-fil-A Ice Cream

If you need to make adjustments for dietary needs or ingredient availability, these substitutions will help you keep the same creamy texture and classic flavor.

  • If you don’t have heavy cream, half-and-half, or whole milk should work.
  • I like coconut milk best, but almond milk will work too.
  • Besides chocolate chips, chocolate syrup or strawberry syrup make good flavorings. I also like to get a bit of variety with other mix-ins like crushed Oreo cookies or Reeces Pieces.

Top it off! I like to top homemade ice cream with hot fudge. You could also make your favorite ice cream shop creations, like a banana split, with this ice cream.

Frequently Asked Questions About this Chick-fil-A Ice Cream Recipe

Still have questions? These quick answers cover the most common things readers ask about texture, equipment, and storage. If you don’t see yours here, ask in the comments.

Can I make ice cream without the ice and rock salt?

It’s feasible. You’ll just need a different model of ice cream maker that doesn’t need the ice and rock salt.

Can I make a lower-fat / lower-calorie version?

Sure, just replace the heavy cream with a lower-fat milk or replace the coconut milk with almond milk.

How long can homemade ice cream last in the freezer?

If you store ice cream in an airtight container in the freezer, it will last 1 to 2 weeks before it starts developing ice crystals and losing creaminess. Of course, it never lasts that long at my place!
