Episode 11: Why It’s Time to Ditch Store Bought Granola Bars

When I saw the preservatives and added sugar [in a store bought granola bar] and learned how the body digests that sugar super fast and has you reaching for another granola bar, I wanted to make a healthier granola bar that solves that and keeps you full longer.

In this episode I talk with Catrina founder and inventor of the Granola Bar Pan about why it is time to ditch store bought granola bars!

Why We Need to Start Making Homemade Granola Bars

Homemade granola bars not only taste better than store bought, but are healthier!

Many packaged granola bars are full of sugar and often contain artificial ingredients. They leave us unsatisfied and reaching for another bar a short time later or if there are any artificial ingredients our body doesn’t know how to process those ingredients which can leave you with a feeling of discomfort.

Making a homemade granola bar solves both those issues as well as you can cater the granola bar to the nutritional needs of your family with added fiber, vegetables or protein.

Why the Ingredients You Use in a Granola Bar are Very Important

The ingredients we use in the foods we mae matters! Granola bars can play an important role in fulfilling your nutritional needs. Raw oats and flaxseed meal both contain fiber which can help our digestive system stay regular.

Other times determining how your body processes food in a certain way also matters. For Catrina, after experiencing too much gas from regular peanut butter she switched to the Once Again organic brand of peanut butter and learned that the cross tamination with wheat in most peanut butter brands was causing her discomfort. Once she made the switch to Once Again, her discomfort eased.

Listening to what our body is telling us about the food we are eating plays a very important part in our health!

Catrina has made so many granola bar recipes that help with balancing hormones, keeping your kids going regular and also assisting with your liver health. Check out her recipes here: https://granola-bar-pan.myshopify.com/blogs/news

3 Tips When Making Homemade Granola Bars

Often people can be intimidated when making homemade granola bars because they fall apart or turn out dry. Here is Catrina’s best tips to make amazing granola bars:

  1. Ensure any nuts you use are very small as larger nuts will make your bar fall apart when you cut into your granola bars.
  2. Use a binding ingredient such as a flax seed egg!
  3. Make sure bars are compacted into the pan – use either the granola bar press OR a piece of wax paper to firmly press down on the bars.
