- 2 pounds ground beef
- ⅓ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- Salt, to taste
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 2 teaspoon garlic powder
- ⅓ cup flour
- ⅓ cup milk
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 white onion
Ingredients for Garlic Butter Sauce:
- ¼ cup softened butter
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- ¼ cup soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce
In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, onion powder, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well using your fingertips.
Form about six patties, shaping them to about half an inch thickness.
Heat a large cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for approximately 4 minutes on each side.
Place cooked patties on a plate lined with paper towels and keep warm in the oven on the lowest heat setting.
Slice the white onion into thin rounds and caramelize in the same pan over medium-low heat. Stir continuously for even caramelization.
For the sauce, check the pan's grease level and add butter if needed. Stir in flour until slightly browned, then add beef broth. Stir continuously until smooth and slightly thickened.
Place hamburger steaks on a serving plate. Top each patty with caramelized onions and the prepared gravy.
- For variations, try topping the patties with garlic butter and soy sauce, adding bacon to the mixture, or incorporating sautéed mushrooms into the gravy.
- Store leftover hamburger steaks in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. For longer storage, freeze the sauce and patties separately for up to two months.
